Like everything else in life, a good thing turns into overused and abused and I am guilty of this too.

I want things now and I want to see results immediately for my efforts. Well life is not like this especially the internet and I still have not fully learned this lesson.

Bookmarking is a Good Example of This, for Me.

Social bookmarking is another good theory for the internet.

It makes me think of a card cataloged at the library, but bookmarks are stuff folks really enjoy so it should be worth looking at.

Bookmarks categorize website pages, articles, videos and blog pages into tags and categories that make it easier to find things you are looking for. They can also increase your website or blog’s rating with Google.

When Bookmarking You Need to Remember:

Make it easy for folks visiting your website or blog to bookmark the page.

Offer a button on the page for the visitor to click on so it takes them directly to a bookmarking site such as StumbleUpon.

Visitors will be much more inclined to share the page because it is easy to bookmark. If it is a difficult thing to do it won’t happen.

Ask your friends and Mom to bookmark your site or blog if it has valuable content to offer.

You can also bookmark your own work, but don’t overdo it.

Some folks bookmark their website or blog everyplace they can and it’s nothing more than a landing page to collect someone‘s name and e-mail address.

Think about this; say you are the search engine algorithm developer engineer for Google. You are looking for some information using Google as your search engine. You know it’s the best in the world and your searches are returning websites that are landing pages and spam because people have abused bookmarking.

Let’s not forget these folks are geniuses and now very frustrated geniuses. How long do you think it will take them to improve their algorithms to omit bookmarks?

Back on track, participate in the social bookmarking site. Where you have the option, develop a large friends list so you can easily share bookmarks. This will build your credibility as well as being a good online citizen. Folks will get to know you.

Bookmark other pages you find interesting. You don’t want to look like the person at a party that goes from person to person telling everyone about themselves and nothing else.

We all know and have seen these folks. I run! Bookmark pages that are articles or postings from your downline. This helps everyone.

At first pick one or two sites to participate in. Don’t over do it. Remember, you want to become part of the community and you can build a large enough following from one or two bookmarking sites to achieve your goals.

Don’t be anonymous. You are trying to build trust and if you won’t even give your name, well, need I say more?

You want folks to follow you. If you have several niches, pick a name for that niche, but be consistent.

Remember our social writers in the newspapers? They may not use their real name, but it was the same name all the time.
