Being positive helps you focus on the solution rather than waste time and energy on the negative. This means you get yourself back on track faster and start thinking of a solution or what you can do instead of staying in a disempowering negative state of mind repeating the same old things that have never worked.

Having positive thoughts prevents you from making clouded judgments, foolish decisions or doing things you may regret later. All of us do things we may regret later when we are in a negative state of mind.
Think back for a moment at some of your worst times. I bet you were not thinking very positively. Maybe even when you were sick, a little run down your thoughts may not be the most positive and you can easily loose control of the most simple situations. I know for myself I get much more irritable when run down because I'm not thinking of positive things. I'm more or less feeling sorry for myself.
What You Focus on, You Attract
The Universe brings you what you focus on. Remember, birds of a feather flock together. If you are always negative and focused on doom and gloom that is what you will attract.
If you have positive thoughts and see the bright side of things you will find you attract folks that are the same. This then becomes your reality and you have a much more likelihood of success.
Expands Your Awareness and Perception
Through practicing positive thinking, you will start seeing things in a different way, things others are not able to see. This is because of the shift in mindset and focus.
For example, whenever something bad happens, you will not just see the negative side but rather have the ability to see the other side of the coin as well. You will see the positive side of things and how everything fits into the overall scheme of things.
If a person is so used to being negative, he or she will only be able to see the negative side of things and miss seeing the good no matter how apparent it is. Once a mindset has been developed, it is difficult to perceive things that are outside that mindset.
Not Everything is Perfect
If you focus on positive thinking you will find yourself happier and see how life goes along easier. There will always be difficult times, but you do have the ability to overcome these times with a positive outlook.
